Mentoring

 Qualities and Roles and Responsibilities for Mentors and Mentees --
These lists are from participants at the February Mentoring Workshop.

Mentor
Qualities:  Be patience, have “been there” experience,  be flexible yet firm, have experience and humor.  Be honest, confident, resourceful, have conflict resolution skills, be an open/effective communicator, know your limitations, be organized, be professional (punctuality and in appearance), be knowledgeable (language, culture,interpreting and mentoring), be responsible and accountable, have sensitivity and understanding, have a good/strong reputation,be non-judgmental, be a good listener, be open, have integrity, be accessible, be responsive, be supportive, be compatible (the mentor and mentee should be able to work together), be qualified (have good skills, respected/respectful),be committed.

Roles& Responsibilities- be encouraging, be supportive, monitor progress, coach, model by keeping up-to-date with certification and liscensure requirements, be honest, hold mentees “feet to fire”, be current in field and knowledgable about current events, be well-rounded, know resources/techniques, have open discussions, give feedback, provide materials and opportunities, guide self-assessment, “teach how”, motivate, be a guide/teacher, be accessible, be a visionary (big picture), help in goal-setting, challenge, have humility, individualize approach to match the mentee, be flexible, share experiences, be understand and clarify boundaries/roles, know yourself, facilitate mentee in achieving their goals, empower mentee and set boundaries, be aware of resources and how to obtain them.
Mentee
Qualities:  Be dedication, be teachable, be a self-starter & take the initiative, be flexibility (time and placement), show commitment, be willing to self-analyze, have an appropriate demeanor, be non-judgmental, have a desire to improve, be motivated, be willing to accept feedback, be committed, have a priority for “Deaf”, be dependable, have strong sign skills/language base, be professionalism, have knowledge of field.

Roles & Responsibilities: actively strive to achieve goals, initiate (watch videos, go to workshops, make videos, read, and observe), seek opportunity to interact with Deaf, keep a journal, follow-through, staying in contact with mentor, do appropriate paperwork applicable to license/certification, be timely/prompt, follow professional dress, show professionalism, respect, take ownership of your own development, measure yourself against yourself (do not always compare yourself to others)
