Re: Requirements for Entering the Interpreter Training Program

Graduating from our program will give you a four-year bachelor of science degree. Following is a list of required classes, pre-admission and admission criteria. The first step in entering our program is to apply to the University. Your first two years will be spent taking general education classes and beginning sign language classes. After two years, you will be eligible to submit an application of intent for admission into the Interpreter Training Program if you kept a minimum grade of "C" in ASL 101, 102, 201, and 202 and a minimum grade of "C" in ITP 215 and 220. Enrollment in this program is limited. We currently accept students into the program on a two-year cycle (e.g. 2010, 2012, etc). The next group of applicants will apply in spring of 2010. Admission to EKU is not synonymous with admission to the ITP. Your application will be reviewed by an Admissions Committee and the student will be notified of the committee's decision.

Criteria for Admission to the B.S. Degree. Limited Enrollment!

Pre-Admission Requirements

    • Admission to EKU is not synonymous with Admission to the ITP.
    • Minimum grade of "C" or higher in ASL 101, 102, 201, and 202.
    • Minimum grade of "C" or higher in ITP 215 and 220.

Upon completion of pre-admission requirements, or while concurrently taking ASL 4, ITP 215 and 220, students will submit an application of intent for admission to the ITP in the office of Wallace 216. The formal application of intent will be accepted based upon completion of the following requirements:

Admission Requirements:

    • An EKU GPA of 2.5 or higher.
    • Successfully completed ASL 201, 202, and ITP 215, 220 with a grade of "C" or higher and an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher for these classes.
    • Successfully completed the Degrees of Reading Power Language Test, and
    • Completed an admission interview by the ITP Interview Committee.

The ITP Interview Committee will select and rank applicants using the following criteria: 1) signing skills, 2) GPA, 3) score on the Degree of Reading Power Language Test, 4) interview score, 5) disposition score. The ITP Interview Committee will determine the number of students admitted to the program in order to maintain an appropriate student-faculty ratio and based on available resources.
